Ostrava - The Ostrava House of Art will present the work of the renowned American architect Daniel Libeskind. The traveling exhibition across Europe will have its world premiere in Ostrava. Unpublished works by the architect will also be on display, said Jana Šrubařová, spokesperson for the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava, to ČTK. Among the well-known designs will be the new look of the site on Manhattan, New York, where the American "twin towers" stood until September 11, 2001. The work of the sixty-four-year-old Libeskind will be showcased through two dozen large panels, and models of some of his buildings will also be exhibited. The exhibition will include audiovisual elements - visitors will be able to watch the documentary film Libeskind: The Making of An Architect. In addition to the design of the new Manhattan development at Ground Zero, from which the architect distanced himself due to later interventions, a project for the Jewish Museum in Berlin, opened in 2001, will be presented, which made Libeskind an architectural star. The exhibition will feature not only Libeskind's built and unrealized structures but also his designs for theatrical sets and costumes, as well as design work. "It will be an interactive exhibition that will also change slightly. In the first week after opening, we will add a small design detail - watches designed by the architect, which will be launched on the market on September 15," said Jaroslav Němec, one of the curators of the exhibition, to ČTK. The traveling exhibition, which starts on Thursday, September 16, is unique in that its entire concept was created right in Ostrava. It is backed by the civic association SPOK - Society for Ostrava Culture, which collaborated with the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław for the preparation. There will be another "exhibition stop" in Poland next year. The exhibition's authors also collaborated with the architectural Studio of Daniel Libeskind in New York. "It was only this May that we managed to gain their trust enough to receive permission to organize the exhibition," said Němec. According to him, the busy architect will not attend the Thursday vernissage. "We are currently looking together for another possible date for his visit to Ostrava, possibly associated with a lecture or a guided tour," suggested the curator. The architect is expected to come with his wife Nina, who manages external relations for his studio. Daniel Libeskind was born on May 12, 1946, in the Polish city of Łódź, in a Jewish family that survived the Holocaust. In 1957, he moved with his parents to Israel, and after three years, they all relocated to New York. Originally, he studied music and earned money by playing in bars. In 1970, he graduated from the prestigious Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, and also studied in Essex and London. Libeskind has lectured at numerous universities in North America, Europe, and Japan, and has received many awards and honorary doctorates.
