Genoa (Italy) - The demolition of the remaining part of the Morandi Bridge, which collapsed in mid-August along with several dozen cars, will begin on December 15. According to the ANSA agency, this was announced today by Genoa's mayor Marco Bucci. The highway bridge was a busy connection between the Italian inland and coastal regions before the August disaster, in which 43 people died.

"I anticipate the start of the demolition work on December 15,"
said Mayor Bucci in an interview with SkyTg24, who is also on the commission for the construction of the new bridge. It is to be built according to the design of the renowned architect and Genoa native Renzo Piano, who is also a co-author of the design for the Centre Pompidou cultural center and gallery.

The Morandi Bridge in Genoa, built in the mid-1960s and named after its author, stood on a busy highway route and connected the Italian inland with both the Italian and French Riviera. A section of it collapsed on August 14, dropping about thirty cars from a height of approximately 45 meters, including a Czech truck, whose driver survived the accident. Forty-three people died in the disaster.

An investigative committee of the Italian Ministry of Transport concluded at the end of September that the operator of the Genoa bridge, the company Autostrade per l'Italia, had not ensured its safety. According to the committee, the company did not take adequate measures to prevent the bridge's collapse, even though the risk of collapse had existed in previous years. The company rejected the committee's criticism and labeled the findings of the ministry's expert committee as "a hypothesis that needs to be verified."

At the beginning of September, the Genoa prosecutor's office announced that it had begun investigating 20 people, including the management of Autostrade per l'Italia, on suspicion of homicide. The company's CEO Giovanni Castellucci faced criticism in August when he refused to apologize for the disaster, stating he would wait until investigators determined who was responsible for the tragedy.
