Genoa - Due to a possible connection to the mafia, the Neapolitan company Tecnodem has been excluded from the reconstruction of the bridge in northern Italy's Genoa. The agency ANSA reported this, citing today's announcement by the Prefect of Genoa, Fiamma Spena. The company was informed of its removal from the list of subcontractors by the Directorate for the Investigation of the Mafia (DIA). The bridge collapsed last August.

Tecnodem is engaged in metal recycling. Among the subcontractors tasked with the demolition and reclamation of technological facilities - activities worth 100 million euros (over 2.5 billion CZK), this company has been involved since February.

The sole shareholder of the company, Consiglia Marigliano, reportedly has no experience in scrap processing. Her relative, Ferdinando Varlese, listed as an employee of the company, has been previously convicted multiple times - in 1986 and 2006 for connections to various clans of the Neapolitan mafia Camorra.

The Morandi Bridge in Genoa, built in the mid-1960s and named after its designer Riccardo Morandi, stood on a busy highway route connecting the Italian interior with both the Italian and French rivieras. A section of it collapsed on August 14 last year, sending dozens of cars, including a Czech truck whose driver survived the accident, plummeting from a height. Forty-three people died in the disaster.

The government now promises that the new viaduct will be operational by April next year. It is set to be a construction of steel and concrete, designed by Italian Renzo Piano.
