Genoa - Due to the August collapse of the highway bridge in northern Italy's Genoa, local companies suffered losses amounting to 422 million euros (about 11 billion crowns). This estimate was reached by the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, which spoke with representatives of hundreds of companies affected by the tragic event. This was reported today by Reuters.

The Chamber of Commerce reached out to company owners to help them obtain assistance from state funds for disaster victims. The information they gathered could also serve as a basis for potential later lawsuits once it is determined who was responsible for the bridge's collapse. Companies calculated their losses related to damage or destruction of buildings, warehouses, technologies, or supplies at 63 million euros. The remaining 359 million euros were lost by companies due to higher prices and lower revenues caused by the disaster.

The Morandi Bridge in Genoa, built in the mid-1960s, stood on a busy highway route connecting the Italian inland with the Italian and French Riviera. Part of it collapsed on August 14, with about thirty cars falling from a height of roughly 45 meters. 43 people died in the incident.

In early September, the Genoa prosecutor's office announced that it had begun investigating 20 people, including the management of Autostrade per l'Italia, on suspicion of homicide.

The company Autostrade per l'Italia, which operated the bridge, allocated 500 million euros (nearly 13 billion crowns) for the construction of a new bridge and for compensation to the families of the deceased and those who lost their homes due to the collapse of the structure.
