In the former main cultural and spiritual city of Islam in Europe, with its unique Moorish architecture, a new artistic center is set to rise. The Centro de Creación Artística Contemporánea by the Madrid studio Nieto Sobejano will be built on a site adjacent to the Koolhaas congress center. The non-hierarchical arrangement of the building reflects inspiration from Spanish-Muslim architecture, which permeates the entire city and culminates at the thousand-year-old Great Mosque. Instead of a white exhibition cube, the architects designed a house made of closely connected spaces, where each room has its own distinctive character. As inspiration for the concept, the isotropic (direction-independent) arrangement of the mosque with its mysterious geometric layout and rhythmic interspersing served as a model. The main motif is the hexagon. By combining exhibition halls of three sizes (60, 90, 150 m²), a play of shapes is created, culminating in a large lecture hall. In addition to exhibition spaces, other rooms (workshops, offices, and "laboratories") are also based on hexagonal plans. The supplementary facilities of the center include a "black box" for multimedia projections, a café, and a media library. The entire building will be made of exposed concrete and completed in 2009.
