In the northwest of Spain, in one of the oldest Galician cities, a new museum has been created in Parque de la Milagrosa, which is largely located underground. The authors of MIHL (Museo Interactivo de la Historia de Lugo) are the Madrid studio Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, which won an international competition in 2007. Above ground rises a series of cylindrical volumes reminiscent of the circular bastions of late Roman walls encircling the historic core of the city of Lugo. The perforated walls of the varying widths of corten steel cylinders speak to the park with a rough materiality and clear geometry. A spiral staircase takes visitors down to the underground level with circular exhibition halls. Large circular courtyards segment the entire complex and provide ample daylight underground. The contemporary interpretation of Roman bastions has, besides its unique aesthetics, its origin in functional use - local historical finds from the period of the Roman Empire are placed in the towers of MIHL.
