The architectural studio Woods-Bagot is responsible for the design of a tower over one kilometer high for Dubai. The Nakheel Harbour & Tower project was presented to the public in the presence of His Excellency Ahmed Sultan bin Sulayem on October 5, 2008, at the Cityscape real estate fair in Dubai. The entire port complex and the towering centerpiece includes around 270 hectares of usable space, providing homes for approximately 55,000 residents and more than 45,000 jobs. The investment company Nakheel, the project's contractor, hopes for an annual influx of nearly one million visitors. The mass of the one-kilometer-high Nakheel Tower is conceived as four separate towers merged into one structure inspired by Islamic aesthetics. The building's distinctive crescent-shaped base is designed to accentuate the impressive height of the structure. The entire multi-trillion-dollar complex is situated in the geographic center of the Emirate of Dubai at the intersection of Sheikh Zayed Road and Arabian Canal. Future expansions are planned with additional investments from Nakheel, such as Jumeirah Park, Jumeirah Islands, Discovery Gardens, and Ibn Battuta shopping mall. One of the design intentions of Nakheel Harbour & Tower is to minimize automobile traffic while favoring mass transit through trains, buses, and boats. Environmental consideration and safety were prerequisites for a project of unique scale and significance. "Nakheel seeks inspiration for its projects not only from traditional Islamic design but also from its principles, innovation efforts, the pursuit of perfection and diversity, and the quest for growth and progress. These are the principles that motivated Islamic culture and helped create the great cities of the past. They are now shaping the cities of the future," said His Excellency Sultan Bin Sulayem, who further added: "Nakheel Harbour & Tower is situated in the heart of New Dubai, where we now focus and strive to create a unique community, a place for living, working, resting, and entertainment, a place for art and culture." Not only the design of the one-kilometer-high building, but also other examples of iconic projects backed by Nakheel (The Palm Trilogy, The World, Waterfront, Dubai Promenade, the Universe…) have undoubtedly changed the world's perception of Dubai.
