After the success of last year's pavilion at the Serpentine Gallery, and while completing the ambitious project to expand the Tate Modern, the Swiss duo Herzog & de Meuron presented another project for London. In the former docklands area of Canary Wharf, now replaced by administrative skyscrapers, a pair of residential towers is set to rise on an eight-hectare site called Wood Wharf Areal, which will be the tallest in London's docks upon completion. The urban plan for the new residential district was designed by Farrell and Partners. In the first phase, along with Herzog & de Meuron, local firms Allies and Morrison and Santon Williams will also implement residential buildings. According to Ascan Mergenthaler, one of the partners of H&deM, the new Wood Wharf Towers will offer “the possibility of individual living in the heart of the city at the intersection of public and private space”. The project aims to become a symbol as well as a center of the new urban district Wood Wharf, which is expected to enrich the purely administrative area of Canary Wharf. Additionally, a public park is also set to be created on the premises. Construction work will begin next year, with the entire project expected to be completed in 2017. More information >
