The Festival of Urban Architecture OPEN HOUSE WIEN in September will allow visitors to explore architecturally interesting buildings and areas in Vienna and Lower Austria for free. Over the course of two days, on the weekend of September 9 and 10, 2023, the organizers encourage discovering the city through guided tours in a total of 62 buildings that are not normally accessible to the public. The buildings will be open both days from 10 AM to 5 PM, free of charge and without prior registration.
The second weekend in September will belong to the OPEN HOUSE WIEN festival, which will make architecturally exceptional objects accessible to the public. This urban architecture festival, which allows visitors to penetrate into normally inaccessible spaces, has been held in Vienna regularly since 2014. Preparations for this year's edition are currently reaching their peak, and the organizers have already released a list of a total of 62 buildings that architecture enthusiasts can visit during this year's event. The event targets a broad audience, entry to the buildings is free, and there is no need to reserve a specific time in advance.
There are numerous buildings worth seeing. Among them, one can mention, for example, the new laboratory of hydraulic engineering at the Vienna University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), the monumental DC Tower building, which at a height of 250 meters represents the tallest office building in Austria, or a modern wooden family house near Vienna. As usual, visitors will be guided through the architectural objects not only by experts in the field of architecture but also by about 180 volunteers, or people who work or live in the buildings themselves.
The program also includes three special routes that connect selected buildings based on certain themes. The first route, titled MID-CENTURY VIENNA, will take visitors to well-known and less well-known architectural objects from the 1950s and 1960s. The next route will focus on the theme of lifelong learning and will showcase various educational institutions in the city – from kindergartens, through libraries, research laboratories, to universities. The third route will emphasize the constructive dialogue about urban architecture between city residents, architects, planners, and developers. Through nine specific projects, this path will illustrate how architecture can truly contribute to a good life in the city.
The OPEN HOUSE WIEN festival of urban architecture is part of the worldwide initiative OPEN HOUSE WORLDWIDE, which attracts up to one million architecture admirers each year in a total of 52 global metropolises, from London, Helsinki, Rome, Athens, through Mexico City, New York, Buenos Aires, to Prague or Vienna. The Vienna organizers can look forward to up to 35,000 visitors each year.
