John Hejduk

A petition has emerged on the internet for the preservation of the only Berlin realization by New York architect John Hejduk, whose residential tower is located in the western part of Kreuzberg near the Jewish Museum.
John Hejduk, who was part of the famous “New York Five”, was invited to participate in the IBA (International Building Exhibition) in 1987, where he ultimately realized a slender fourteen-story tower with garret apartments situated between two wings of five-story residential buildings. This project is among the few realized projects by John Hejduk, who is otherwise better known for his theoretical writings.
However, the new owner of the residential complex, BerlinHaus Verwaltung GmbH, approached the renovation with such vigor that it decided to remove the characteristic sunshades, extend the balconies, and the new facade coating also does not respect the original color scheme. BerlinHaus has already responded to the first critical feedback by withdrawing the visualizations of the planned reconstruction from its website and announced the opening of a discussion, promising to take greater heed of the opinions of expert groups.
So far, over 2,600 signatures have been collected for the petition to save Hejduk's tower, among which are also Bernard Tschumi and Peter Eisenman.
