Glasgow - A large fire broke out yesterday in the building of the School of Art, which is among the most significant architectural monuments in Scottish Glasgow and all of Britain. The fire broke out shortly after noon, reported the AP agency, citing Scottish authorities.
Flames were visible on the roof and in the windows of the Art Nouveau building designed by architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1909. The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) rated the school as the best British building of the last 175 years in 2009. RIBA chief Stephen Hodder described the fire as "an international tragedy." Students and staff were evacuated in time. Many were preparing events for the end of the school year.
