The post office building was constructed between 1915-23 designed by government architect G. C. Bremer and is one of the few buildings in central Rotterdam to survive the bombing during World War II. Van Berkel's project largely preserves the original structure and adds a new organic wing. The glass and mirror facades create an interesting optical illusion at the transition between the old and new parts. The main feature of the interior space remains the parabolically vaulted cashier hall, from which there will be access to individual fashion and lifestyle boutiques, grocery stores, and hotel reception areas.
Renovation of the Rotterdam post office will begin next year, with completion scheduled for 2013. Info>
