The municipality of Feuersbrunn is located on the loess ridge of Wagram that stretches along the left bank of the Danube. The village, with six hundred inhabitants, lies west of Krems and ranks among the oldest and most significant wine-growing areas in Lower Austria.
Local winemaker Franz Anton Mayer approached a pair of young architects from Linz to reconstruct his cellar at the end of the wine alley. A wine shop with tasting possibilities was created on a tourist-frequented path, featuring a tiered roof reminiscent of sports stands with views between the vineyards. The project to renovate the wine cellar is named “Weinblick,” which has a double meaning: the first is the view from the roof onto the vineyards, and the second is the perspective on the world distorted by wine consumption. In addition to a pair of gates from the street, an entrance window was added, allowing access from the shop directly up to the roof via stairs. While the exterior and shop underwent significant transformation, the cellar itself, carved out of the rocky mass, remained almost unchanged.
