Riyadh - Saudi Arabia plans to begin construction of the new tallest building in the world as early as next week. The Kingdom Tower is expected to have 200 floors and reach a height of one kilometer, reported the American news network CNN. It will be located in the Saudi city of Jeddah. The current tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa, which is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and stands at 828 meters tall.
The construction of the Kingdom Tower will cost $1.23 billion (24.4 billion CZK) and will use 80,000 tons of steel, according to the Saudi Gazette. Building such a tall skyscraper, especially on the coast, will not be easy. The building's foundations are to be 60 meters deep, and the tower must be constructed from very durable materials. For this reason, the Advanced Construction Technology Services is currently testing various types of concrete.
Problems may also arise with wind gusts. To prevent this, the building will regularly change its shape. "Since every few floors will have a different shape, the wind will move around it and the gusts won't be as extreme as in the case of a uniform building," said architect Gordon Gill from the Chicago firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, which is responsible for the project.
