On the northern edge of Graz, a new residential building has been constructed at the intersection of block and villa housing by the local studio INNOCAD. At Carnerigasse number 34, on the site of a former Art Nouveau school, 97 social apartments ranging from 18 to 110 m² have emerged. The apartments serve the needs of the local Catholic community to accommodate singles, young families, and seniors. The elongated, broken floor plan in the shape of an L helps define a courtyard with a shared garden. The gray facade and regular grid do not attract attention, which was the authors' intention. The building is protected from street noise by an outer walkway covered with a wire mesh featuring a large chestnut ornament. In contrast, the glazing of the loggias, balconies, and terraces facing the inner courtyard features a delicate print of chestnut leaves. The new apartment building matches the massing of the original development, although the openings in the facade are disproportionately larger.
