The winner of the competition for the new cultural center in Groningen was announced via the city's website on February 2, 2007. In addition to the expert jury, a public vote also decided the winner, with 25.1% (21,565 votes) selecting the project by the Amsterdam studio NL Architects from seven competing designs. The prominent building in the city center is set to comprise a series of cinema halls, a public library, a square, and the existing Groningen Museum. The preliminary form of the winning design was approved by the municipal council at the end of November 2007, and at the beginning of last year, the final plans were presented, with the construction of the Groninger Forum expected to be completed in 2012. The Groninger Forum will be located on the eastern edge of the Grote Markt square, which was damaged during World War II and the current buildings have ceased to serve their purpose. The new cultural institution will significantly exceed the surrounding structures.
