The competition project for the bridge by the Dutch office NL Architects is titled "Pearl River Necklace" and addresses transportation along the Pearl River at its mouth into the South China Sea. The architects cleverly tackled the issue of driving on the left side of the road in Hong Kong, while neighboring Chinese city Zhuhai operates on the right side. The reason for these differing traffic systems in the Pearl River Delta can be traced back to colonial history: the areas of Hong Kong and Macau adopted left-hand traffic from the British.
In addition to bridges, the architects also propose a series of floating islands covered with solar panels to make them completely independent from mainland China. The artificial islands are connected to the bridges much like knots on a rope. The border zone connecting Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macau is very fluid and relaxed. The authors perceive their bridge as "a new symbol of the pulsating metropolis." Their competition design forms a complex organism - a linear structure that aims to be flexible, self-sufficient, and easily dance across the ocean.
