Dubai - Dubai plans to construct another tower that will surpass the current city landmark and the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which stands at 828 meters. The project is designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava Valls. The development company Emaar, which will ensure the construction, announced that the exact height will only be known upon completion, but that the tower will be slightly taller than the Burj Khalifa.

The construction costs are expected to amount to one billion dollars (24 billion CZK), and Emaar wants to present it as a "gift to the city by 2020," during which Expo will be held in Dubai.

Emaar spokesperson Muhammad Abár described the tower as an elegant structure that will feature observation floors as well as levels with shops and a hotel. According to models, it will be a slender tower resembling the shape of a minaret, anchored to the ground with thick cables.

The UAE is not the only country obsessed with height records of its buildings. In Saudi Arabia's Jeddah, a structure is currently under construction that is also intended to surpass the Burj Khalifa and is expected to be over a kilometer tall.
