Dubai - Construction of the tallest tower in the world was started yesterday in Dubai. It will be another record-breaking structure in a city that already has the tallest skyscraper in the world, Burj Khalifa. The tower is expected to be completed in 2020, Reuters reported. The Dubai government did not disclose how tall the building will be or how much it will cost.

According to Dubai's news site Khaleej Times, the project will cost one billion dollars (24.3 billion CZK), and the tower will be 100 meters taller than the Burj Khalifa skyscraper, which stands at 829.8 meters.

While the tallest skyscraper in the world is the Burj Khalifa, the tallest tower in the world is located in the Japanese metropolis - Tokyo Sky Tree, which is a 634-meter tall broadcasting and observation tower that also features a restaurant.

Dubai is a major tourist and entertainment center and is constantly spinning plans for new attractions. The new tower is set to be part of a luxury residential area.

The building was designed by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava Valls. The slender tower is meant to evoke the image of a minaret anchored to the ground by strong cables. It will have several observation levels, hanging gardens, a luxury boutique hotel, and other tourist facilities. The tower will also feature movable lighting.
