In the autumn of next year, Vienna will begin transforming the sprawling parking lot at the largest city market, Naschmarkt, into an attractive space for the public. The asphalt parking lot, which becomes a heat island in the summer, will turn into a blooming oasis that reflects the wishes of local residents for ample greenery, opportunities for cooling off, and new spaces for cultural events and the sale of regional products.

A sea of flowers instead of a desert of asphalt. This is the motto of the winning urban concept for transforming the extensive parking lot at the famous Vienna market Naschmarkt. The area between the busy Linke and Rechte Wienzeile streets, where food and drink lovers gather from Monday to Saturday, has the largest urban heat island due to numerous parking spots. As part of its efforts to reduce the share of asphalt surfaces in the city, the Vienna city council has now focused on this gastronomic oasis as well. The parking lot, covering an area of 12,000 m², is planned to be transformed into an attractive public space with plenty of greenery and multiple options for cooling off in hot days. The plan also includes the preservation of the Saturday flea market.

The creation of a concept for the transformation of the existing parking lot was preceded by an intensive process that once again involved local residents. "At the beginning of the project, there was broad public participation, which produced very clear results. Residents wanted a place to sit in greenery and without consumption, a space for creativity, and for regional products, as well as the preservation of the flea market," summarizes Markus Rumelhart, a representative of the sixth city district. The city is very eager to fulfill similar wishes from locals. Increasing the attractiveness of public space, cooling and greening measures align with the strategic goals of Vienna's urban planning and have already become established practices here.

The winning implementation project, which succeeded in the international architectural competition, comes from the D\D Landschaftsplanung studio by renowned Austrian landscape architect Sabine Dessovic. Together with the Vienna architectural office Mostlikely, they presented a modern concept aptly named "Blühender Naschmarkt," or "Blooming Naschmarkt." The existing parking lot will flourish in the future thanks to the planting of colorful perennials, grassy beds, and 65 new trees. An active contribution to biodiversity in the area will also come from the rooftop garden at the newly created entrance to Naschmarkt from the west side. The garden will be freely accessible to the public and, besides providing food for insects, will offer a unique view of the entire market area.

The architects intensely considered what aspects a modern market should fulfill. For them, a marketplace represents much more than just selling goods, and so they incorporated a universal open space into the project. Here, not only the beloved Saturday flea market can take place, but also other outdoor events – from cinema to cycling courses, public readings, or yoga classes. In the entire concept of the reconstruction, cooling and ample water play a fundamental role. A central element will thus be an area of approximately 250 m² with a flexibly controllable water feature.

The new Naschmarkt will also delight food enthusiasts, as the winning project also plans for space for additional delicacy stalls. Under the blooming rooftop garden, a year-round market will emerge, providing space for local producers and focusing on seasonal produce. The creators of the proposal would also like to transform Naschmarkt into an educational place focusing on food quality in the future, with an open kitchen that will be ideal for cooking classes. The city will begin work on the comprehensive transformation of the current heat island in the autumn of next year.
