Winning project of the museum in Venice by Sauerbruch Hutton

Within the 12th Architecture Biennale, a number of different awards are presented. The Golden Lion in the national pavilions category was awarded to the Kingdom of Bahrain, the award for lifetime achievement was received by Rem Koolhaas, the best project award went to Junya Ishigami, and the Silver Lion for young architects was awarded to OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen + Bas Princen.
The main program of the Venice Biennale is also accompanied by a number of other events. At the end of last week, the winner of the Audi Urban Future Award was announced. It was Jürgen Mayer H., who, along with four other finalists (Alison Brooks Architects, BIG, Cloud 9, standardarchitecture), is exhibiting his current projects in the Scuola Grande della Misericordia until the end of September (entry is free). Another event that you should not miss when visiting the Venice Biennale is the exhibition of competitive designs for a new museum in Venice - "M9 New Museum for a New City".
The jury of the Fondazione di Venezia selected the work of the Berlin-based sauerbruch hutton from a total of six proposals. The other five competitors were the French Agence Pierre-Louis Faloci, the Italian Carmassi Studio di Architettura, the British David Chipperfield, the Spanish Mansilla+Tuñón Arquitectos, and the Portuguese Souto de Moura.
In the center of the Venetian district of Mestre, which lies on the mainland, a new cultural complex "M9 New Museum for a New City" is set to rise, where collections of the "Museum of the 20th Century" will be exhibited, as well as temporary exhibitions, a media center, an archive, and a lecture hall. Remaining spaces will be available for retail and various service providers to rent.
The design by sauerbruch hutton completes the street line, creating a new internal atrium, yet the museum remains open and free with a characteristically colorful façade. All six competition proposals are displayed until November 21, 2010, in Mestre at Via Poerio 24.
