Borovany – People can learn about medieval cooking and dining on Saturday, July 18, at the Archeoskanzen Trocnov in the České Budějovice region. The birthplace of the Hussite commander Jan Žižka invites diners to free tastings of noble dishes. Marek Svoboda from the South Bohemian Museum in České Budějovice, which operates the outdoor museum, informed journalists of this.

The event Welcome to the Table will start at 10:00 with short commentated entries, hunting games, spear throwing, and archery. From 14:00, visitors can enjoy the main part of the program featuring dining presentations from the end of the 14th century, prepared by the Mensa Nobilium association. Admission to the event is free. Interested parties can look forward to actors in period costumes, medieval cooking, dining presentations, and tastings will also be available.

The Mensa Nobilium group was formed as a loose association of those interested in historical cooking and dining. Most members are united by the idea of reviving the intangible culture associated with dining in the High Middle Ages. "The focus of their interest is the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century in Central Europe, with a temporal overlap into the Holy Roman Empire, and possibly France. Dining would not be complete without close cooperation with the kitchen. An inseparable part of Mensa Nobilium are cooks and helpers who are tasked with preparing dishes to meet all requirements for serving," stated Svoboda.

The area of Jan Žižka's birthplace in Trocnov near Borovany is among the most significant cultural monuments not only in the České Budějovice region but also throughout the South Bohemian Region. Between 2020 and 2023, builders constructed the Archeoskanzen Trocnov here. The costs exceeded 50 million crowns. They built a gentry estate, a rural settlement from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The museum interactively showcases buildings and period construction methods. The faithful reconstruction of historical objects also serves educational purposes for schools and the public.
