Prague – A new park or square could be created in the future by the Olšanská Street in Prague. The street should see new trees or a bike path added. This is based on the concept of an architectural-urban study developed by the UNIT architects studio for the city’s Institute of Planning and Development (IPR). This was reported by IPR spokesperson Marek Vácha in a press release. People can now submit their comments on the proposal.

The aim of the planned modifications to the street is to improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport, as well as to coordinate construction plans in the surrounding area. A new neighborhood is set to arise on the extensive site of the former freight station, and construction is also planned in the nearby former Telecom area.

The proposal includes linking Parukářka with the Olšany cemeteries and the creation of a new park on the northern side of the cemeteries. At the intersection of Olšanská and Jana Želivského streets, the study proposes the establishment of a new square. Within Olšanská Street itself, the architects have suggested the construction of a separate bidirectional bike path. The tram track is to be grassed over, and up to four rows of tree alignments are to be added to the street.

"Everyone can now express their opinion on the study's concept through an online questionnaire, which can be filled out until July 17," stated IPR director Ondřej Boháč. The study should be completed by the end of this year.

A separate study for the freight station area has already been created in recent years, serving as a basis for the approved change to the zoning plan. This will allow construction that companies Central Group, Penta Real Estate, and Sekyra Group plan there. According to the city’s plans, the extensive functionalist station is to be preserved. The planned development of a neighborhood, where up to 20,000 people are expected to live, has been criticized by some local residents who are particularly concerned about increased traffic.
