Zlín – The Baťa skyscraper, which houses both the regional and financial office, is awaiting the second phase of restoration. The plan includes, among other things, the repair of the building's facade as well as insulation and cladding of the roof. Construction work is expected to begin this summer and should be completed by the end of next year, said the regional spokesperson Soňa Ličková to ČTK. The Baťa skyscraper is a protected monument and a popular tourist destination.
"We are planning the revitalization of the facade's defects, specifically the restoration of the cement plaster and brick strips, as well as the repair of the waterproofing and cladding of the roof, repair of the masts, and the movable walkway for window cleaning. Window films for the southern and western sides of the building will also be added," said Governor Radim Holiš (ANO).
The costs will exceed 23 million crowns, and a grant from the Integrated Regional Operational Program is expected to cover 90 percent.
The second phase will follow the first one, which the region completed in 2019. During that phase, the low voltage distribution station was renovated, the paternoster was repaired, the elevators were replaced, the entrance to the building was adjusted, and the exhibits in the building were modernized.
The skyscraper was completed in 1938, built by Jan Antonín Baťa according to a design by architect Vladimír Karfík as a new headquarters for the Baťa shoe company's management. At a height of 77.5 meters, it was the tallest building in Central Europe at the time of its completion. The building was completely renovated between 2003 and 2004.
