The Brno City Hall wants to fundamentally change the appearance of Mendel Square

BRNO - Mendlovo Square in Old Brno will undergo a significant transformation in the coming years. The city council plans to renovate it and is currently selecting from several architectural proposals. The change will be further enhanced by a three-billion investment from an as yet unknown private investor, as well as the planned International Clinical Research Center (ICRC).
"This is a fundamental change for the entire area, including transportation solutions. Various options will be displayed at the Urban Center for citizens to express their opinions," said Deputy Mayor Radomír Jonáš (ODS) to reporters today. Mendlovo Square is an important transportation and transfer hub, adjacent to the Old Brno monastery with the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a brewery, and the Faculty Hospital of St. Anne.
"The renovation should include, among other things, covering the public transport stops and underground garages. We also want to resolve the connection with the monastery gardens to make them accessible to the public," Jonáš said. There will also be access to a new complex from the square, which the American Mayo Clinic wants to operate in Brno.
The biggest change compared to the current appearance of the square is still shrouded in mystery. The previously unknown private company reportedly wants to invest three billion crowns in the construction in the old manufacturing areas between Mendlovo Square and the Brno Exhibition Center. "I do not have the investor's permission to name them. However, it will be a commercial-administrative center with several hundred residential units," Jonáš said.
It is not known when the modifications to Mendlovo Square will begin. "Everything must first go through the approval process; it is a matter of several years," stated the deputy mayor.
Work on Mendlovo Square will follow the renovation of Freedom Square, which is currently dug up and partially closed. According to the spokesperson of the city hall, Pavel Žára, the new pavement will be laid this autumn. A new fountain and the renovation of the plague column are also planned.
