KAM: "This is not a comprehensive redesign of Mendlovo Square, for which an urban planning competition was held two years ago."

Brno - The Office of the Architect of the City of Brno (KAM) plans to implement sales stalls with a new design, shelters with green roofs, perennial flower beds, wider sidewalks, and new trees in Mendlovo Square in Brno within two years. They have developed a study for the modification of public spaces that will be connected to the planned replacement of steam pipes with hot water pipes scheduled for 2021.

This is not a comprehensive redesign of Mendlovo Square, for which an urban planning competition was held two years ago. "The implementation of the winning design may still take a long time, as it depends on a complete change in the organization of traffic in the square. However, Brno residents have been waiting for improvements to its condition for decades, which is why we have proposed partial modifications," said KAM director Michal Sedláček.

According to the study, the city will now commission the preparation of a project for modifications, which is expected to invest more than 40 million crowns into. The modifications aim to create a more comfortable environment for pedestrians in this busy square, which is also a transportation hub.

"The main idea of the proposal is to divide the space of Mendlovo Square into smaller, attractive, clear, and well-equipped parts. This will be achieved primarily through the planting of new trees and perennial flower beds, expanding areas for pedestrians and vendors, removing barriers, reducing the number of traction poles, and replacing furniture," said David Zajíček, head of the public space department at KAM.

The modifications to the square are expected to begin next year after the completion of the replacement of steam pipes, and should be completed in 2022.
