Brno - The Brno University of Technology (VUT) plans to renovate its campus in the center of Brno. Within the area defined by the streets Údolní and Úvoz, it plans to consolidate the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Architecture, and two smaller institutes. The school has announced an architectural competition for the renovation, and starting January 8, 22 proposals submitted by architectural teams will be displayed in the hall of the VUT Center on Antonínská Street, as informed by spokeswoman Jitka Vanýsková.

"The Faculty of Fine Arts currently operates in inadequate facilities on Rybářská Street. When it is located in the same complex as the Faculty of Architecture, both will be able to share a number of common facilities, which will bring both investment and operational savings," stated Vanýsková. In addition to the two faculties, the newly reconstructed campus will also house the Institute of Forensic Engineering and the Education and Consultancy Center.
The campus on Údolní and Úvoz streets was built at the end of the 19th century as a barracks. It was used for many years by the Brno University of Technology. Until 2002, there was a possibility that VUT would regain one of the buildings through restitution. The final decision that the entire campus will remain the property of the university influenced the strategy for positioning university facilities, the spokeswoman added.
Therefore, the school administration announced an architectural competition, and experts were particularly tasked with checking whether all the planned facilities could fit within the area, as well as proposing the most suitable and economical architectural solution.
The competition attracted 22 architects or teams, including creators from the Netherlands, Spain, and Slovakia, the spokeswoman informed. Nine jurors selected four proposals last autumn, the authors of which were to develop further. "On January 19, the jurors will reassess the proposals and select a winner to recommend to VUT for implementation," the spokeswoman added.
