BRNO - The completion of the southwest bastion - a massive fortress of the Brno castle Špilberk - will cost approximately 60 million crowns. The city museum will use it as a depository, which it currently has in the southern wing of the castle. Its halls will eventually be converted into spaces for organizing concerts, exhibitions, and social events. "We will issue a tender in which we will select a contractor for this project," said Jan Holík, deputy mayor of Brno, to ČTK today. According to him, the completion could begin later this year. The bastion was part of the castle's fortifications. Its rough construction has been created in recent months on the foundations of the original structure, which has not survived. The building needs to be completed and furnished. It will provide 1,400 square meters of space for storing exhibits. In total, the bastion will cost 76 million crowns. Although the creation of a replica bastion with a new depository will significantly help the Brno city museum, it will not completely solve its problems with the lack of space for the proper storage of exhibits. After the completion of the building, the museum will still lack about 2,800 square meters of storage space. Therefore, the city will have to seek additional suitable locations for its museum to convert into depositories. The Museum of the City of Brno is a city-funded organization. It includes not only the Špilberk castle with its famous casemates, but also the Brno Tugendhat villa, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
