Brno - The first of three underground water tanks in Brno's Žlutý kopec has been handed over to the administration of the Tourist and Information Center Brno (TIC), which will make it accessible to the public. The city's council approved the loan of the water tank. This was reported in a press release.
The water tank is to be used for film shoots facilitated by the Brno Film Office. There are also plans for occasional public tours. "The dates for the first tours will be announced in July," said TIC Brno director Jana Janulíková.
The public will be able to access one of the three water tanks thanks to an entrance that the city had built last year for 2.3 million crowns. Until then, access was only possible through a hatch via a steep ladder.
The three water tanks under Žlutý kopec between Tvrdého and Tomešová streets were constructed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Two of them are built from red burnt bricks without the use of steel, wood, or reinforced concrete, while the third, the youngest water tank from 1910, consists of two concrete reservoirs.
These waterworks had a total capacity of more than 20,000 cubic meters and water was pumped into them from the treatment plant in Pisárky. They were taken out of service in 1997 and have been empty and preserved since. In 2019, the Ministry of Culture declared the complex of buildings a cultural monument.
