Brno - Brno today will officially open Zelny Trh after more than a year of reconstruction. The renovation began last March and cost 67.7 million crowns. The square has been completely renovated, including the historic Parnas fountain. It will offer over a hundred places for fruit and vegetable vendors.
The square was supposed to be finished by January this year, but everything was delayed by an archaeological survey that revealed valuable finds from prehistoric and medieval times, such as a circular stone base of a late medieval well or remnants of the foundation of a Renaissance fountain. Therefore, the opening has been postponed by four months and has increased in cost by seven million crowns compared to the original estimates.
After the renovation, Zelny Trh has transformed into a relaxation zone with a market. It now features several trees, even though there used to be no greenery there. Fountains have been created, and urban furniture has been added.
At Zelny Trh, as before, vendors will sell fruit and vegetables. However, before the opening, disputes accompanied the allocation of places to traders, as the new city council composed of Žít Brno, ANO, KDU-ČSL, and the Green Party introduced different rules for selecting vendors than were in place under the previous administration of the ČSSD and ODS. The city council explains this by stating that previously, vendors traded goods bought from large merchants and sold them further. The new conditions aim to favor smaller entrepreneurs. While some welcome the decision, others oppose it, just as the opposition Social Democrats and Civic Democrats do.
