Brno - Brno will begin repairing the Vegetable Market on Monday for 60 million kronor. A total of 48 million kronor will be covered by a European Union grant. The historic square will transform in less than a year into a traditional relaxation zone, where people will not only buy fruits and vegetables, but will also be able to stop, rest, and sit down, informed CTK spokesman of the Brno city hall Pavel Žára today.
The city will hand over the square to the contractor on Monday. The work should be completed in 298 days. "There will be 17 new trees in the area. The historic fountain Parnas will be renovated. Newly proposed water features of the fountain in front of the Moravian Museum," said Žára.
However, that’s not all. "Both the roads and sidewalks will be repaired. Street furniture, benches, and trash bins will also be addressed. The area should come back to life and be beautiful," said Brno Mayor Roman Onderka (ČSSD) to CTK.
Part of the reconstruction will also include the installation of three underground containers for separated waste. The parking system in the square will also change. There will be 51 parking spaces, including three for the disabled. "A traffic regime of a pedestrian zone will be established in the square with a valid traffic restriction for cars," said Žára.
During the reconstruction of the square, the market has temporarily moved to Moravské náměstí. Once the repairs are completed, the marketplace will again operate at the Vegetable Market.
The centerpiece of the square is the Parnas fountain from the late 17th century, which is located roughly in the center of the area. At the upper end of the square stands the Holy Trinity Column with statues of the Immaculate, St. John Nepomuk, St. Primitivus, St. Constantine, and two angels from the period of high baroque. Important buildings include the Dietrichstein Palace, which houses the Moravian Museum, the Husa na provázku Theater, the so-called Little Špalíček, and the recently renovated Reduta Theater.
The historical character of the square was disrupted in the 1950s by the construction of a shopping center building. "The function of a marketplace has been held by the square since the Middle Ages," added Žára.
