Brno - Brno has taken over an unused area in Pisárky from the Ministry of Defense, where it plans to build a sports complex by the end of 2023 for approximately 300 million crowns. Brno's mayor, Markéta Vaňková (ODS), stated this today at the symbolic handover. The complex, which is located near the Anthropos museum pavilion, will feature fields for various sports, an in-line skating track, and a climbing wall.
The city has taken over a grassy football field along with adjacent land and an economic building covering more than 28,000 m², as well as a former military gymnasium and related land covering more than 1,600 m². The city obtained part of the area free of charge, while it paid for the other part. "The Ministry of Defense, as part of its long-term accommodating stance towards territorial self-governing units, transferred the football field and the adjacent land free of charge in the public interest. The city has already paid 11 million crowns for the former gymnasium and related spaces," said Ľuboš Hajduk, head of the ministry's department for the disposal of unnecessary property.
Preparatory work is set to begin next year. According to the mayor, construction is planned to take place in three phases, with each section being opened not only to sports clubs but also to the public after completion. Everything must be finished by 2023, which the city has also committed to the ministry. According to Vaňková, about one-third of the total costs, which amount to 300 million, could be covered by subsidies. "The planned sports facility will include, for example, four fields for small-sided football, a 650-meter long in-line track, a competitive in-line oval with a banked track of 200 meters, a beach volleyball court, disc golf, workout areas, or a climbing wall," enumerated Jaroslav Suchý, Brno's councilor for education and sports. He mentioned that the city is planning to connect to a mountain biking circuit and link foot and cycling paths between the Prague Wall and trails in Libušin Valley. After necessary modifications, the gymnasium could also be used, as many athletes have approached the city expressing their desire to utilize it, according to Suchý.
The football field previously served students of the University of Defense. The gymnasium was established in 1847 as a building for a municipal shooting range. It is currently unused.
