Brno - Brno has received a grant of 2.3 million crowns from the Ministry of Culture for the restoration of the facade of Mahen Theatre in Malinovského Square. The total costs of the first phase will exceed five million crowns. The city administration informed about this in a press release.
The remaining three million crowns will come from the city budget. Mahen Theatre is part of the National Theatre Brno. "The expert working group unanimously recommended that the funds obtained be invested in the first phase of the necessary heritage restoration of the facade of Mahen Theatre. The planned costs for this reconstruction are estimated at 5.3 million crowns," said Deputy Mayor Tomáš Koláčný (Pirates).
The first phase of the facade restoration is set to begin later this year and pertains to the eastern part of the facade - that facing Malinovského Square. The work includes the restoration of stucco elements of the facade and balcony, the restoration of two allegorical figures above the pediments, and the stone portals of all five entrances, including the adjacent staircases. The work will also include the replacement of damaged balcony tiles and the replacement of damaged granite paving of the carriage entrance.
The Mahen Theatre building was completed in 1882 and was the first theatre building on the European continent equipped with electric bulb lighting.
Brno obtained the grant from the Program for the Regeneration of Urban Heritage Reserves and Urban Heritage Zones. In the past, it has already used it, for example, for the restoration of the city walls and the waterworks under Petrov, the facade of St. James' Church, or the pavilion in Denis Gardens.
