Brno - The Brněnská Street in Pohořelec, from which the Brno-střed district had a market removed a few years ago, is set to be reconstructed this summer. The costs are around three million crowns, said Brno-střed spokesperson Kateřina Dobešová to reporters. The removal of the market is still being addressed by the courts, but according to Dobešová, it is possible to proceed with the street repairs. Additionally, starting Saturday, a three-day festival will take place in the area aimed at showing people visions for the development of the city.
According to Dobešová, the reconstruction of the street is being prepared by the city company Brněnské komunikace. "There should be new pavement and a smaller alley of three trees in the middle. Benches, trash bins, and public lighting will be added. Everything should start in the summer, and we would be happy if it is completed in the summer as well,” Dobešová said.
Starting Saturday, a three-day festival will showcase a vision of how Brno's squares and parks could look in the future and where people could build apartments or engage in sports. This was stated by the deputy mayor, Tomáš Koláčný (Pirates).
The removal of the market from Pohořelec is still being addressed by the courts. The district initially sent a removal request to the company. When they did not comply within the stipulated time, the district had the stalls of Asian vendors removed at the end of 2016. They explained this by stating that the stalls were there illegally. The then councilor of Brno-střed, Svatopluk Bartík (for Life in Brno), also described them as unsightly and did not want anyone to occupy the space illegally.
The company 1. Brněnská Investiční therefore filed lawsuits in court. While they succeeded in the regional court, the Supreme Administrative Court recently sided with the district and upheld its appeal against the regional court's verdict, which stated that the district had unlawfully had the market dismantled. "The Supreme Administrative Court accepted our appeal and returned the case to the regional court. After discussions with lawyers and Brněnské komunikace, we acknowledged that the reconstruction could proceed,” Dobešová added.
