Říčany (near Prague) - The former cinema in Říčany near Prague is set for demolition in the spring. The dilapidated building on Komenského Square is, according to Mayor David Michalička (Calm City), very energy-intensive and unusable. A temporary park will be created in its place. In the future, a modern building with an underground parking lot is planned there, which could accommodate, for example, the basic art school, Michalička stated today on Facebook.
The abandoned building, which stopped showing films in 2006, can no longer be saved according to the mayor and is starting to become dangerous. Before the demolition, the city wants to organize a farewell to the old cinema with the participation of witnesses. "A single-purpose cinema does not attract today, and moreover, there is a cinema Na Fialce operating in Říčany," Michalička pointed out. The leisure center Na Fialce also has a twenty-five-meter swimming pool and a sports hall. In its cultural hall, alongside film screenings, lectures are held, and theater performances take place.
In the past, the city planned to convert the cinema into a community center. It was to provide facilities that would be used by local interest groups or organizations providing social services, for example, to seniors, youth, or the disabled.
Recently, the town hall in Dobříš in the Příbram region also demolished a former cinema. The unused building from the 1950s was initially intended to be transformed into a library with community activities, but the municipality ultimately withdrew from that. The project proved to be unrealistic and financially too burdensome. Therefore, the city demolished the building in 2021.
