Prague - The best transport project of recent years has been chosen as the transformation of Moscow Street in Prague from 2014. Today, the design studio Jakub Cigler Architects received this year's main Vít Branda Award for the renewal of the street, which evaluates transport projects and changes in public spaces. A total of 54 Czech and Slovak projects from the years 2014 to 2022 were entered into the competition.
"There were many remarkable realizations of transport constructions and measures among them, and I did not envy the judges their selection of the best. Everyone who plans and implements measures for cyclists and pedestrians and changes the view of public space deserves recognition,” said Jaroslav Vymazal, chairman of the organizing association Partnership for Urban Mobility.
Winners were decided by a nine-member jury made up of representatives from organizations focused on transport, architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, visual arts, and environmental protection.
In addition to the main award, awards were also given in individual categories to the authors of measures for pedestrians in the form of park paths, footbridges, and landscaping adjustments near the Komárov housing estate in Brno, as well as area projects for cyclists in Třebíč, where a cycling circuit was created around the city, and the project of municipal pumps in Strmilov in the Jindřichův Hradec region was also recognized. The Oslavany-Ivančice bike path won in the public voting.
The aim of the Vít Branda Award, according to the organizing association, is to present transport projects and measures for the development of active mobility and the cultivation of the urban environment, which can then serve as examples for other cities. One of the partners of the competition was the State Transport Infrastructure Fund. "It is important to encourage representatives of cities to perceive that focusing on pedestrian and cycling traffic can also help transport," said Minister of Transport Martin Kupka (ODS) regarding the competition. According to him, the competition is a way to share successful practices.
