Cheb - Cheb plans to demolish another part of the former barracks on Zlatý vrch over the winter. After the second phase of demolition, only the parish charity building for the homeless, Betlém, should remain on the site. However, that will ultimately disappear as well, as the city intends to use the area for housing development, Cheb Mayor Petr Navrátil (CSSD) said today.

"In the first phase, only the largest building was demolished. We used it to verify prices and also to resolve the biggest issue, as this building was occupied illegally by homeless people. Since we planned five million crowns for the first phase and it was ultimately contracted for about one million, we have money left for continuation," Navrátil stated.

While the first phase only involved one, albeit the largest building in the former barracks complex, the second phase includes 11 construction objects. However, these are significantly smaller buildings or just shelters. Similar to the first part of the demolition, the second phase was able to significantly reduce costs due to the tender. The project had estimated about seven million crowns, while the lowest bid was just under one million without VAT.

The city received the barracks free of charge from the army more than ten years ago with the condition of non-commercial use for ten years. Only after this period expires can the area become a development zone, where the city wants to attract investors. Since it is an exclusive area, a southern slope with a view of the historic center of the city, the city wants to limit new construction for the first time with a regulatory plan. This plan is expected to determine the basic parameters for the shape and layout of multi-family and single-family houses. According to Navrátil, a Cheb variant of the Prague district Ořechovka could emerge.
