The book is a collection of texts for the exhibition Compact City held from March 19 to April 24, 2011 at 4AM/Gallery of Architecture in Brno. In addition to contributions from participating exhibitors and speakers, it also presents previously unpublished text by Tomáš Valena and comments from the curators. The exhibition itself took the form of a continuous workshop; throughout the duration of the exhibition, five exhibitors from five Central European countries created thematic installations. Each participant had access to the entire exhibition hall for one week, culminating in a presentation and confrontation with an invited lecturer. The premise of each installation was the sharing of the exhibition hall with others and the additive concept of the exhibition. The exhibition was essentially an unfinished experiment, just like the city itself.

This book is a reader, a compilation of texts relevant to the exhibition “A Compact City” that took place from March 19 to April 24, 2011 in 4AM/Gallery of Architecture in Brno. Apart from the contributions of individual exhibitors and lecturers, an unpublished text of Tomáš Valena is included alongside commentaries of the curators. The exhibition itself was given the form of a continuous workshop - five exhibitors from five Central European countries introduced topical installations for the duration of the event. Every participant had at their disposal the entire exhibition hall for the period of one week, concluded by a presentation and opportunity for discussion with another lecturer. Each and every installation was based on the exhibition hall being shared with other exhibitors and the additive nature and concept of exhibitions. In its own way the exhibition represented an unfinished experiment similar to the one of a city itself.
