Brno - The popularity of timber constructions is growing in the Czech Republic. Last year, companies constructed 2,159 family houses with a load-bearing structure based on wood. The sector thus grew year-on-year by 7.25 percent, which is two and a half times more than the construction of family houses from traditional materials. This was reported by the Association of Prefabricated House Suppliers (ADMD) based on data from the Czech Statistical Office.

Of the total number of 14,548 family houses completed in the Czech Republic last year, 2,159 were houses with a load-bearing structure based on wood. The share of timber constructions in total construction thus increased by 14.84 percent over the year.

Most of the timber constructions in the Czech Republic arise using the lightweight frame skeleton method, i.e., panel construction. "This indicates that as the demand for timber constructions rises, so do the production capacities of larger manufacturers, who carry out their production in covered halls without negative weather influences, where they also achieve not only excellent quality but better work efficiency and higher production productivity," said ADMD chairman Vratislav Blaha.

According to findings by scientists from Mendel University in Brno, such constructions are also the cheapest form of timber buildings. Experts from the Institute of Forestry and Wood Economics and Policy compiled a price overview of timber constructions available on the market. The overview works with data concerning the size of the built space.

"When recalculated per built area, the most expensive are small log cabins and timber houses, while passive houses and constructions made of laminated wood are among the cheaper options," said Josef Lenoch from the Institute of Forestry and Wood Economics and Policy at Mendel University in Brno.

The Association of Prefabricated House Suppliers expects that the share of timber constructions among family houses will continue to grow. "I believe that within a few years, the share of timber constructions in the area of family houses will increase to the level of Germany or Switzerland, at around twenty percent market share of family houses," added Blaha.
