Ústí nad Labem - The House of Culture in Ústí nad Labem can offer producers and audiences modern equipment and facilities. In Building B, selected companies have renovated the theater hall, which has retained its exceptional acoustics and acquired modern lighting and comfortable seating. A space for a gallery and a place for intimate performances has been created on the upper floor. The ballet hall will also be available for use again. The original classrooms for clubs have been transformed into small apartments for creators to stay overnight before performances. The first look into the new spaces will be offered today through guided tours.
The costs for the replacement of stage technology, modification of spaces, installation of a new facade, photovoltaic installation, and other works amounted to 80 million crowns, of which 58 million crowns were covered by a subsidy from the National Recovery Plan. "The condition for the subsidy was a deadline that was very tight. It took two and a half years from the information about the grant allocation to the opening of the building. During that time, we had to prepare the project documentation, apply for building permits, select the contractor, carry out the construction, and obtain occupancy permits," said Jan Kvasnička, director of the Cultural Center of the City of Ústí nad Labem, which manages the House of Culture.
During the modernization, experts refurbished chandeliers, doors, and paneling. "We were warned that the theater hall has excellent acoustics and that we must not interfere with it. Therefore, the original seats were first sent to the laboratory for measurement to determine their acoustic properties. New ones were custom-made based on that," Kvasnička stated. For the comfort of the audience, there are about a hundred fewer seats in the hall than originally. The capacity is 520 seats, and accessible entrance is provided, with designated parking for wheelchair users in front of the building.
The air conditioning system with recovery, cooling, and heating is completely new. Next to the hall, a space for a theater café has been created, but it has not yet been approved for use. It could serve visitors within a year. The production has new facilities, including three small apartments. "It happens that creators build the stage for several hours deep into the night. Then they have to move somewhere to sleep. Or people from further away want to stay overnight after the performance. Now it's finally possible," Kvasnička noted.
The ballet hall has been successfully restored. On the upper floor, there is space for a gallery and a hall for more intimate performances. Building B has also changed its exterior. Although the House of Culture was renovated in 2010, the northern facade remained original. Now it is new, as well as the windows and doors of the building. There is a photovoltaic power plant on the roof.
The first theatrical performance in the renovated hall will be on Thursday with the production "Compatible Parts" by the Klicpera Theater from Hradec Králové. By the end of this year, 23 performances are scheduled in the new hall.
