VVP AVU and the House of Arts České Budějovice cordially invite you to the book launch of House of Arts České Budějovice 2013-1998, which will take place on Saturday, January 17 at 6:30 PM at the House of Arts on Přemysl Otakar II Square in České Budějovice. A concert by NOIZ plays Rausch, Lehn (D) + Bertoncini (IT) + Vrba (CZ) will follow at 7:30 PM.

The book includes sixteen years of the House of Arts České Budějovice, which under the guidance of curator Michal Škoda has become one of the most prestigious institutions for exhibiting contemporary art and architecture in the Czech Republic. The gallery presents a dramaturgically compact whole that showcases both Czech artists (e.g., Adriena Šimotová, Stanislav Kolíbal, Ján Mančuška, Eva Koťátková, Dominik Lang) and international artists (e.g., Mimmo Paladino, Martin Creed, Carsten Nicolai, Christopher Williams, Lawrence Weiner, Liam Gillick, Heimo Zobernig, Florian Pumhösl). In recent years, presentations of architecture (e.g., Josef Pleskot, Miroslav Šik, Projektil architekti, Takeši Hosaka) have also regularly appeared, which—like the visual art exhibitions—significantly engage with the gallery space and the medium of the exhibition in general.

In addition to introductory texts, the core of this book is the archive of exhibitions that took place at the House of Arts from 1998 to 2013, totaling 151 exhibitions. It also includes a comprehensive interview with the curator and a detailed bibliography. The graphic design visually corresponds with the reductive style of the type of art that the gallery primarily focuses on. The publication follows a period of one gallery, but it can also serve as a case study on the issue of institutional operations in the field of Czech visual art after 1989—from an unusual perspective of an exhibition space that is, in some sense, exclusive while also operating outside the major centers.

It is published in the newly established Edition Documents, in which the Research Institute of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague focuses on a critical evaluation of recent Czech art.
