Help with the publication of the bilingual publication House of Art České Budějovice II, which will document exhibitions from 2013 and will conclude the long-term activities of curator Michal Škoda, under whose leadership the House of Art gained international acclaim in the field of contemporary art and architecture.

What is our goal?
The goal is to support the publication of the Czech-English book House of Art České Budějovice II (2025–2013) / České Budějovice House of Art II (2025–2013), which will follow up on the previous publication from 2013, and will document the exhibitions organized in this prestigious gallery of contemporary art and architecture from 2013 to the present. The publication will conclude the long-term activities of curator Michal Škoda, under whose leadership the House of Art gained international renown in both contemporary art and contemporary architecture. Over the past thirty years, the gallery has organized more than 230 exhibitions of significant Czech and foreign personalities. An integral part of the gallery's activities is the educational work of lecturer Šárka Kosová, who has always based her programs on currently ongoing exhibitions. Given the uncertain future of the House of Art, the cultural public decided to publish a book that will reflect the significance of the past years of the gallery's operation and its contribution to both the Czech and international cultural, artistic, and architectural scene.

Why support us?

The gallery of contemporary art and architecture in the České Budějovice House of Art has become a prestigious Central European space for presenting contemporary art and architecture over the years – despite its institutional insecurity. Over thirty years, it has organized more than 230 exhibitions by important Czech and foreign personalities.

In the last 13 years, which the planned publication will focus on, there have been 91 exhibitions, including 59 artistic (including photographic) and 32 architectural. The exhibitions were almost always prepared with regard to the exhibition space, including the extension onto Přemysl Otakar II Square in Budějovice. The accompanying educational program for children had no equivalent in the entire South Bohemian Region, attracting more than 4,000 children each year.
Long-time curator Michal Škoda has received, among other things, an honorable mention from the jury of the Architect of the Year 2016 competition, an award for exceptional achievement within the Czech Architecture Award 2017 and also the Institution of the Year 2023 award from the Czech Academy of Visual Arts (even though it is not officially considered an institution, as the gallery has never had its own legal entity). In these prestigious competitions, the House of Art competed with much larger institutions and projects benefiting from significantly larger budgets.

The incomprehensible decision of the council and the representatives of the city of České Budějovice not to support the reconstruction of the House of Art led Michal Škoda to decide to leave his position in the fall of 2025. The reconstruction project by the studios AFF Architekten + Malý Chmel will not be realized, even though the city building on the square is in a disgraceful state, even though the project emerged from an international architectural competition, even though it is in line with the city’s strategic plan and with the goals of the title České Budějovice – European Capital of Culture 2028, even though it has building permission and a promised grant, and even though it brings an exceptional program for the exhibition gallery with an information center, educational center, experimental interactive space, or open terrace on the roof of the building. The city of České Budějovice has yet to present its vision of whether and how the gallery should continue to operate.

Given its uncertain future, the cultural public has decided to publish a book that will reflect the significance of the past years of the gallery's operation and its contribution to both the Czech and international cultural, artistic, and architectural scene.

When will it be out?
Due to the circumstances necessitating the curator's departure from his position in November 2025, the book will be presented and ceremonially „christened“ during the denouement of the last exhibition under his curatorial guidance, on November 29 or 30, 2025 directly in the gallery's premises at the House of Art (exhibition by Malý Chmel Architects – House in House).

Who are we?

The publication of the book was initiated by the cultural public in cooperation with curator Michal Škoda himself. The intention has the support of the initiative House of Art We Will Not Give Up, which came together in the fall of last year to civically support the realization of the reconstruction project of the House of Art on the square, which is owned by the city of České Budějovice. The editor of the publication will be architect and chief editor of the architectural magazine ERA21 Filip Landa, and besides Michal Škoda, the book will also feature contributions from curator and art critic Silvia Čúzyová and lecturer Šárka Kosová. The graphics and typesetting will be provided by the studio of renowned graphic designer Robert V. Novák. Quality translations into English and proofreading are also secured. Printing will be handled by the České Budějovice printing house Karmášek, whose publishing house will also be the publisher of the publication.
What will the raised funds be used for?
The total costs associated with the publication are tentatively estimated at around 720,000 CZK, and a grant application has been submitted to the State Fund for Culture for part of this amount. The acquired financial resources will be used to cover the costs for editing the book, printing and pre-press preparation, graphics and typesetting, English translations, and Czech and English proofreading.

Thank you for any support!
