Mělník - This year could be a turning point for the town's heritage conservation area. After many complex negotiations and a long preparation, work on the reconstruction projects of the historical center has come closer to a successful conclusion. After several decades, it should gain a dignified appearance, said Jiří Dohnal, a heritage conservation officer, to ČTK. One of the most pressing problems in the historical center is the poor surface quality. With the exception of the central square and Ostruhová and Zámecká streets, many places have patched asphalt, which is in critical condition and gives an unwelcoming impression. Therefore, it was decided that during the planned reconstruction of the sewage system in the town center, the streets will be paved according to an architectural study. The subject of the study also includes a proposal for new street furniture. "It sensitively responds to the appearance of the historical center, while not concealing its origin from the early 21st century," Dohnal stated. This street furniture will gradually unify the entire center of the town. By the end of March, work is expected to be completed to make the well under Míru Square accessible. "This is truly a unique work whose parameters will astonish more than one visitor," believes Dohnal. Along with the accessible viewpoint from the tower of St. Peter and Paul Church, the open bastion ditch, views of the confluence of the Elbe and Vltava rivers, and museum exhibitions, the well will represent one of the major attractions for visitors to Mělník. After last year's opening of the bastion ditch, this year, the bastion walls separating Jungmannovy Sady and the ditch will be examined, documented, and gradually repaired. "According to preliminary assessments by experts from the National Heritage Institute, the exploration of this wall can yield many surprises and valuable information," Dohnal said.
The Masaryk Cultural House is also expected to undergo repairs. The functionalist building is proposed for declaration as a cultural monument. Last year, among other things, the entrance doors and windows were replaced. "However, the insufficient load-bearing capacity of the ceilings on the first floor hinders further cultural and social development, preventing the organization of larger social events and balls," Dohnal added. This year, documentation will be prepared for strengthening the load-bearing structures and removing non-original interventions. Then, the facility should create a venue for events for up to 250 people. The surrounding parks will be rehabilitated, and the city plans to create a study for replanting greenery on 17th November Street. The communication is thus expected to transform into an avenue lined with low trees. Like every year, work will continue this year on the repair of St. Peter and Paul Church and several other monuments and buildings. "All these planned projects clearly aim to enhance the center and increase the city's attractiveness," Dohnal added.
