Plzeň will start building a multifunctional sports hall worth nearly half a billion within a month

Plzeň – Plzeň will begin construction of a multipurpose sports hall for ball sports in about a month, almost for half a billion crowns. The city has already selected a contractor for the building, which will be located next to the campus of the University of West Bohemia in the Bory district. The large hall, with a capacity of over 2500 spectators, will be operated by the handball club Plzeň Talent. This was stated by Mayor Roman Zarzycký (ANO).

The city has already signed a contract with the contractor. "We will hand over the construction site and start building within a few days,” said the mayor. The cost of the project is approximately 485 million crowns. According to Zarzycký, it was a condition that the winner would come in under 500 million CZK. The city is building the hall exclusively with its own funds and did not request any support, not even from the National Sports Agency, as it does not want to be restricted by the conditions of grants.

"We will be able to host large tournaments and cups, both Czech and international. It should be sufficient in capacity for major top competitions, not only for futsal but also for handball, volleyball, and others," the mayor mentioned.

The multipurpose sports hall will be built on the outskirts of the city at Borská pole. The project documentation was developed between 2023 and 2025, and last September, councilors allocated 700 million CZK for its construction. "The construction duration is 24 months," Zarzycký stated.

The hall will be located next to the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of West Bohemia and will be connected to the D5 highway. The land is bounded by tram line number 4 to the north, Kaplířova alley to the south, the university campus to the east, and the tram terminus and bus turnaround to the west. "The hall will have changing rooms for athletes, sanitary facilities, catering, a gym, a warm-up area, accommodation facilities for athletes, and a press center. The hall, with its own parking lot, will be the home base for handball and futsal clubs," said Veronika Vítová, head of the city's infrastructure management department.

The playing area of 20 by 40 meters will allow for national and international matches at the highest level according to her. Thanks to the ceiling height of 12 meters, it meets the standards of the European Volleyball Confederation and is also suitable for floorball and aerobics.

Plzeň owns 14 sports facilities. Ten sports venues are rented, and four are on loan. They are used by top clubs and the general public, who can rent the areas from the operators.

The city is also planning to expand the second uncovered ice surface at the winter stadium.
