Bruntál

Bruntál - The main square in Bruntál is adorned by a new fountain after about 70 years. The water feature, costing 2.2 million crowns, symbolizes the river flowing from the nearby Jeseníky mountains and creates a water surface. The town had been waiting for a central fountain since the square's reconstruction in 2004. Ultimately, it managed to create it thanks to a European grant exceeding one million crowns. Jiří Ondrášek, spokesperson for the town hall, stated this today before the festive inauguration of the fountain.
The dominant feature of the fountain is a stone sphere with a diameter of over 90 centimeters and weighing approximately three tons, which rotates in water gushing from a stone pedestal. The fountain also includes two large granite stones from the Alpine region. The fountain's design was developed in 2008 by the Ostrava studio OSA projekt, whose architects drew from the concept of Bruntál as a "city between the mountains and water." The winning variant was recommended to the city by architect Milan Dvořák, who is the author of the entire square's reconstruction.
Beneath the fountain is all the technical background, including a reservoir with a volume of 1000 liters and pumps. "All elements of the fountain are secured with chemical anchors that prevent their removal," added Lumír Hrbáč from the town hall's investment department. Several companies, including a Polish one, contributed to the construction of the fountain.
"The water feature was supposed to complement the central square several times, and the area for its installation has been prepared since the 2004 reconstruction. However, other investments had priority, and the city was primarily looking for a suitable grant title," explained Ondrášek. In the end, Bruntál, which is a member of the Local Action Group Hrubý Jeseník, managed to obtain a grant of 1.1 million CZK from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
A wooden fountain stood in the main Bruntál square as early as the 19th century. In 1907, the then-mayor replaced it with a marble fountain, which decorated the square until 1939. During the war, it was dismantled, and the square had been without a water feature until now.
