Brno - Builders have completed the first phase of the major reconstruction of the Janáček Theatre in Brno. The spaces necessary for public performances received occupancy permits last week. According to the plan, the Janáček Brno festival can take place in the largest theatre building in Brno. Builders will remain in the rest of the building in 2019.
"The technical difficulties that accompanied the reconstruction were notable, which prolonged and complicated the work. The total amount by which the reconstruction has become more expensive due to these complications will be clear only after the completion of the project," said Deputy Mayor Richard Mrázek (ANO) in a press release today.
For example, the roof posed problems, as it was in worse condition than the builders expected. According to earlier statements, the entire reconstruction of the theatre was supposed to cost 600 million crowns excluding VAT.
Due to the reconstruction, the National Theatre Brno, as its main user, had to deal with a number of difficulties. For many months, it lost its largest auditorium and the facilities for the opera and ballet company, its operating costs increased, and ticket revenues decreased. The city of Brno, as the theatre's founder, covers the shortfall. In 2017, it was 26 million crowns; this year so far, it has been 28 million crowns.
People will first enter the theatre on Sunday during a trial operation, with Káťa Kabanová on the program. The premiere of the new production of The Cunning Little Vixen will be the performance that the theatre will officially open after the reconstruction. At the same time, the Janáček Brno festival will begin on November 17.
