Jeseník - In a month, reconstruction of the main Masaryk Square in Jeseník will begin. It will take more than a year and is expected to be completed in April 2010, said František Chovanec, head of the city hall's investment and development department, to ČTK. The city will receive about 41 million crowns in EU grants for the repair worth 48 million crowns. At the end of January, they plan to discuss the construction modifications with building owners and tenants of shops and restaurants. The contractor chosen in the tender is the Ostrava company VOKD. "However, since the second-ranked company ODS Dopravní stavby Ostrava appealed against the results, the timelines have been postponed. The reconstruction was originally supposed to start in the fall," explained Chovanec. At the same time, the city managed to reduce the original price by about four million due to the competition. The city hall realizes that the reconstruction will affect local entrepreneurs and residents around the square. "We have established a link on the city's website where we will regularly inform about the reconstruction. So far, people perceive it positively that the square will be repaired," stated Chovanec. The surface of Masaryk Square will be covered with granite and marble instead of the current asphalt. The square will also receive an amphitheater staircase and a new fountain that will replace one of the existing fountains, commemorating the founder of the local spa, Vincenz Priessnitz. Other cities preparing for the reconstruction of their squares using EU grants include Hranice, Zábřeh, Šumperk, Litovel, and Uničov.
