Brno – The South Moravian Region is looking for a design office to prepare a study for the construction of a train station in Brno near Vienna Street. The station is intended to serve both the newly planned high-speed rail line and the existing line between Brno and Střelice. The study is necessary in order to process the update of the regional land use principles, and it is to be completed in four years, according to information in the public procurement bulletin.

The region wants proposals by the end of July. In 2026, the region may begin discussing the update of the land use principles. Only then will it be possible to prepare for the potential construction of a terminal where future high-speed trains connecting Prague with Brno and potentially Vienna and Ostrava will stop. However, not a single kilometer of high-speed tracks has been built yet, and the Ministry of Transport currently anticipates that the first kilometers could start being constructed in 2026. The region expects to pay 25 million crowns for the study.

The change in regional land use principles also anticipates a change in the land use plan of Brno. This was supposed to be approved last week at a city council meeting, but some coalition parties opposed the proposal. When and in what form the land use plan will be approved remains unclear. The outdated document from 1994 is still in effect.

It is also unclear how large the terminal should be. While the railway administration envisions a rather generously designed structure, the city only wants a smaller stop and does not want any large transport hub due to space constraints.
