ZLÍN - The Zlín City Hall has selected objects from the city’s heritage zone that it would like to maintain and repair in the coming years. The plan for the period from 2006 to 2010 includes the restoration of around twenty objects, such as a factory complex in the city center, the Tomáš Baťa Memorial, winter baths, the Great Cinema, Morýs's houses, the villa of Miroslav Zikmund, and some parks. The mayor, Tomáš Úlehla (ODS), stated this to ČTK. According to him, the repairs will concern typical Baťa architecture as well as objects that are commonly used and which people no longer perceive as monuments. "Many of the objects we have chosen for repair are regularly inhabited. We definitely will not change them at the expense of their users; we do not want to turn them into museums," noted the mayor. Some of the identified buildings have already begun repairs by the city in previous years, such as the Small Scene. This year, construction work has started at the Březnická Primary School, which is one of the oldest schools in the city. The city has not yet quantified how financially demanding the reconstruction of all the objects will be. In addition to its own resources, it regularly receives state subsidies for this, amounting to hundreds of thousands of crowns annually. The amount in the coming years will also depend on the quality of the prepared plan and the assessment by the Ministry of Culture. For larger investments, the city would also like to use European funds. For people living in the heritage zone, especially residents of typical Baťa houses, the city hall is preparing to publish a guide with advice for repairs, extensions, or landscaping and garden modifications. The urban heritage zone, covering an area of 700 hectares, is defined by the city boundaries from 1939 and includes about 1,750 objects in the areas of Letná, Lazy, Podvesná, Zálešná, Díly, and the industrial area in the center of Zlín. It is home to about 30,000 of the approximately 78,000 inhabitants of the city.
