Kolín - Kmoch Island on the Elbe in Kolín, which currently serves mainly for walks and occasional concerts, is expected to undergo significant changes within about five years. The city has completed a study that aims to transform the island into a representative space where people can find opportunities for sports and cultural activities, said Kolín's mayor Vít Rakušan (Change for Kolín) to ČTK. "We have completed a very detailed study for the revitalization of Kmoch Island. It is a study, and we prepared it with the understanding that we are of course passing it on as a final material to those who will come after us," Rakušan told ČTK. The study, which offers several alternatives, is based on how the island looked during the First Republic, when it had, for example, a restaurant or a dance hall. The work should proceed gradually to ensure that the island remains accessible to the public. One of the options also includes the construction of a small lookout tower and changes to the park layout. Work has already begun on a dock for pedal boats, which is co-financed by the Kolín car manufacturer TPCA. "The basic idea is to turn the island into a cultivated recreational center, similar to what it was once. And to provide activities for all groups of Kolín residents. From young, sports-minded people to older citizens who will just go there to relax or enjoy culture," Rakušan added. The city will use grant titles for the revitalization of the island, but the majority of the costs will be covered by its own funds. The island, named after the composer and conductor František Kmoch, is accessible from both banks of the Elbe via footbridges for pedestrians and cyclists.
